Der zweite große Einsatz für die 101. US-Luftlandedivision war die Operation Market Garden, September 1944. Ziel war es, die Strassen westlich der deutschen Grenze am Rhein gegen deutsche Truppen zu sichern, damit alliierte Panzereinheiten freie Fahrt nach Deutschland hätten. Der deutsche Widerstand aber war größer als angenommen, so dass nach acht Tagen der Einsatz abgebrochen werden musste und insgesamt 2.110 Soldaten der Luftlandedivision den Tod fanden.

Auch nach den Einsätzen in der Normandie und den Niederlanden kämpfte die U.S. Airborne an vorderster Front mit. Im Dezember 1944 gingen 12.000 Männer in die Schlacht um Bastogne und wurden dort eingekesselt. Danach ging es nach Süddeutschland und zurück in das französische Mourmelon, wo für einen möglichen Absprung über Berlin trainiert wurde.
